Teeth whitening

Overview

Tooth whitening is one of the most common dental procedures done today. Always discuss it with your dentist before undergoing this treatment plan. Make sure to tell your dentist about any of these:

  • sensitive or discolored teeth
  • decay or white spots on the teeth
  • infected gums
  • previous dental work, like bridges or crowns

The effects of teeth whitening can last for 4 to 12 months, depending on the type of treatment done. Also, if patients avoid the consumption of staining foods or beverages, the whitening effects may last even more.

Over the counter whitening kits
Always choose whitening kit that is approved by the American Dental Association and follow the directions provided on the package. Most kits require 7 to 30 days of consistent use for guaranteed effects.

Dentist supervised whitening kits
These treatments provide better whitening grades and are faster than over the counter kits. There are two types of kits available:

  • in office treatment kits ? these whiten the teeth 5 to 10 shades
  • dentist dispensed, take-home kits; these contain a higher concentration of whitening solution and are easier to use;

In office teeth whitening treatment
Your dentist will initially perform a visual exam of your teeth, gums and bone structure. After this, your dentist will:

  • prepare the mouth area for the treatment, by covering the lips, gums and the tongue, exposing only the teeth;
  • apply the professional teeth whitening solution to your teeth;
  • expose your teeth to a light for 15 minutes which activates the whitening gel;
  • invite you to relax for the duration of the procedure;
  • reapply the gel for two more times.
