Why get a root canal treatment?
A root canal or endodontic treatment is required to save a severely injured, decayed or cracked tooth. This is typically done when the inside of the tooth is also damaged, infected or inflamed. If not done properly, tooth abscess or infections are common.
Root canal procedures are usually done in two office visits. After a successful restoration, your tooth will function as a normal, healthy tooth. With proper care and good oral hygiene, the restored tooth can last a lifetime.
What is an endodontist?
Endodontists are root canal specialists. Essentially, they are specialized dentists who completed an additional 2 year training in the care and treatment of the inner parts of the tooth (the tooth pulp). If needed, your dentist will refer you to an endodontist for further treatment. Usually, dentists work closely with endodontists to improve your oral health.
What are some common symptoms?
Visit your dentist if you experience any of these symptoms:
- tooth or gum pain, increased sensitivity or discoloration
- tender teeth, when touched
- tooth abscess
- pus drainage in your mouth
- swelling and tenderness in your lymph nodes
A digital X-ray might be required to determine the exact cause of your symptom.
What is a root canal treatment?
During a root canal procedure, your dentist will remove the diseased pulp near the tooth’s nerve. The pulp is removed, and the chamber is cleaned, medicated and closed off. A dental crown is then put in place to protect the tooth.
What happens after I am diagnosed?
Your dentist will assess your situation and consult the digital X-rays. Then, an endodontist will examine the tooth, the gums and the bone structure. If a root canal is required, he or she will:
- apply a local anesthetic to alleviate pain
- use a dental dam to protect the damaged tooth during the procedure
- create an opening in the top of the tooth in order to remove the pulp
- the pulp chamber is thoroughly cleaned, medicated and filled with biocompatible material, like gutta percha
- place a temporary filling
- then, your general dentist will install a crown to protect your tooth.
